My name is Rachel Kerr, and I'm a full time music teacher with a passion for health and fitness. I live in the Syracuse, NY area with my cat Bandit, and my wonderful husband who I recently married on October 7, 2017. My hobbies including cooking, hosting friends and family at my home, and making music, via singing in choirs, and playing woodwind instruments in bands throughout the community.
My Success Story
I was not always into health and fitness. In fact, if you told me when I was a teenager that I would even be remotely interested in wellness as an adult, I would've told you that you were nuts. I was a total theater kid in high school, and wasn't very athletic at all.
Often, I'd thought of myself as the "bigger girl" within my group of friends, but I walked everywhere during my undergrad at Syracuse University (Go Cuse!), so my weight was always kept in check during college. When I chose to continue my graduate education at SU, I was commuting to campus rather than walking. Around this time, I had also entered a promising relationship (with my now husband!), where a lot of social interaction was based around food. I subsequently gained a ton of weight! I found myself closing in on 180 pounds, which was a lot for my 5'4" frame. My doctors had begun to comment on it, and I knew it was time to make a change.
I tried a couple of different approaches. I joined a gym, and worked with a personal trainer. I tried body wraps. I tried weight loss pills. I made some small progress, but I wasn't really committed to a lifestyle shift.
In August 2016, I was inspired by a friends' weight loss success with Beachbody's 21-Day Fix program. I didn't want to pay for the program, and I thought to myself, "I could do this on my own." I calculated and measured out my food, just like the program suggests, and I took fitness classes at the local YMCA, but it really wasn't working. I was missing one key piece–a community of support.
By September, I was finally ready to commit. I purchased the 21-Day Fix, and completed a full round of the program. I began to see the results immediately. It took me a while to get used to the meal planning & prepping, and to build in time for my workouts (given that I'm a full time music teacher), but I was told that even if I could fit in just fifteen minutes before work, it would still be better than nothing. This is a message I took to heart.
Fast forward to February 2017, and I had completed a few more rounds of the program. I was rummaging through my closet and found a dress I had worn to a wedding a few years back. I put it on and I was SHOCKED with the change. I started comparing photos of myself and couldn't believe what a difference I was seeing. Currently, my weight is in the upper 140s, and am much more active. I fit comfortably in clothes, and I'm no longer scared or intimitdated by the thought of wearing tank tops or dresses–rather, I'm excited to.
What I Do
I run fitness accountability programs as a part time job. I work as a 'coach', checking in with people and helping them reach their own personal health and fitness goals, whether they include major weight loss, toning up, or simply learning to eat better. The benefits of the Beachbody program are what inspired me to become a coach. Initially, I thought "even if I only help a few other people, it'll be worth it", but it has blossomed into so much more! I have witnessed firsthand how many friends and family members are adopting healthier lifestyles around me. I am humbled when they tell me that they have chosen to make healthier choices because of me, and I find it incredibly rewarding.
